Assistant Professor, Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology.
Research Summary
Dr Charalambos Michaeloudes joined the European University Cyprus School of Medicine in September 2022 as an Assistant Professor of Biology and Medical Research. He previously worked as a researcher at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, and as an European Respiratory Society Long-Term Fellow at the University of Cyprus. He received research funding from the European Respiratory Society and the Imperial Centre for Translational and Experimental Medicine. Dr Michaeloudes had been a Visiting Fellow at the Hong Kong University – Shenzhen Hospital and acted as a scientific advisor for biotechnology companies. Currently, he is an invited member of the European Respiratory Society College of Experts and an Honorary Research Fellow at Imperial College London.
Dr Michaeloudes’ research aims to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to the development of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, in order to identify novel therapeutic targets for these diseases. His research interests include:
• The role of mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic reprogramming in abnormal immune responses and airway remodelling
• The molecular mechanisms regulating the adaptation of lungs to oxidative stress
• The role of redox signalling in the regulation of airway inflammation and remodelling
• The mechanisms underlying corticosteroid insensitivity in asthma and COPD
Education
• PhD in Clinical Medicine Research, 2009, Imperial College London
• MSc in Molecular Life Sciences Research, 2005, King’s College London
• BSc in Medical Biochemistry, 2003, King’s College London
