Acting Dean, Professor of Anatomy
Prof. Elizabeth Johnson has focused her research in the field of neurosciences and in particular in areas related to chemical, molecular and functional neuroanatomy
Research Summary
She is Professor of Anatomy and Dean at European University Cyprus, School of Medicine. In addition, she is Professor of Anatomy at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens. She was previously Associate Professor of Anatomy- Histology-Embryology at Ioannina University and research associate at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Johnson received her primary training at the NIH, with a joint position at the National Institute of Child Health/ Human Development and National Institute of Mental Health. Johnson studied Functional Neuroanatomy at Cornell and University of Maryland, and had post-doctoral training in Molecular Neuroendocrinology/Chemical Neuroanatomy at the NIH. All levels of her training were accomplished with competitive training grants, including an Individual National Research Service Award, and Intramural Research Training Award. Johnson has focused her research in the field of neurosciences, particularly in areas related to the functional neuroanatomy of stress and stress-related disorders. With her team, she has assessed the clinical and basic science corollaries of neuroendocrine function, neuroanatomy, molecular mechanisms of nerve cell death and apoptosis, peripheral nerve regeneration, among others using a wide variety of in vivo, in vitro and in situ state- of-the-art methodologies. This work, which includes over 300 publications, has amassed over 10,000 citations (H-index 40) has achieved 16 awards and honors. She is on the Editorial Board of core anatomical textbooks and atlases and has written her own textbook on Neuroanatomy. Johnson has served on various administrative posts, such as the Scientific Board of Directors, Ioannina Biomedical Research Institute, (merged Foundation for Research & Technology-Hellas). She serves on several expert panels as Scientific Peer Reviewer, is a member of over 10 Editorial Boards, and a Reviewer in over 35 journals. Johnson is known for her rigorous Anatomy teaching program for over 30 years. She spearheaded the curricular reform of anatomy programs, to include multi-model active teaching methods, and devised the new basic science, competency-based spiral curriculum at EUC. Her efforts were recognized on the cover of “Anatomical Sciences Education”, of the American Association of Anatomists. Currently she serves on the Federative International Programme for Anatomical Education (FIPAE) of the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA). In addition to working on 9 separate Master of Science Programs, where she co- coordinated 2 programs, she organizes in-depth neuroanatomy hands-on courses for neuroscientists. She has trained close to 30 graduate and post-graduate students.
